Sportsman
Motorcycle Class
On another cold day, seventeen motorcycle racers
turned out for the “Samoa Challenge Cup”, sponsored by AAMCO Transmissions.
Unlucky Racing’s Mike Pires
was impressively quick with his reaction times, earning the #1 Qualifier award
with his .003 R/T during qualifying.. Pires earned the 1st
round bye, but was ultimately eliminated in the 2nd round by Mike
Pettit.
While Pettit advanced through his side of the
ladder, eliminating James Surber and Mona Christensen
along the way, Leif Magnussen did the same from his
side by defeating Kevin Mitchell and Unlucky Racing teammates Ronny Klewin and Mike “Sport” Burns.
Magnussen, who won the event on Saturday, was hoping for another final round win. But his opponent, Mike Pettit, had other ideas on his mind – including the retaking of the points lead from James Surber. Pettit managed to win the ideal, adding another trophy to his collection, AND moving back into the #1 position in overall season points.
Currently, the top five in season points are Pettit (352), Surber (312), Kirk Speelman (300), Burns (267), and Magnussen (260). With racers only counting their best 9 of 13 events, the points chase will certainly tighten up even more as the season winds to a close with events on September 10th and September 24th.
During a special, invitation only race between 2005
points champions, Black & Motorsports’ John Widmann defeated John Antongiovanni,
Dale Waddel, and Troy Beck to earn the Champion’s
trophy. Widmann,
who is currently in 2nd place in the Divison
7 Sportsman Motorcycle Class (vying for his 3rd NHRA Championship)
will next race with his teammate, Wayne Cox, at the Division 7 event August
25-26 in
