Motorcycle Class
For the last event of the season, one would expect a “let down” of excitement as the season closes and most racers prepare for the upcoming winter months. Not so…..
Seven racers competed at the Samoa Championships, with Mike “Sport” Burns earning #1 Qualifier status by posting a .013 reaction time during qualifications. Burns, hoping for a final round appearance, was eliminated by Dave Smith in the semi-final round. From the other side of the ladder, George Brooks Sr. advanced to the final round by eliminating “Chopper” Leif Magnussen in Round 2, setting up the final between he and Smith. Brooks, capitalizing on his excellent reaction times all day, defeated Smith in the final round to claim his first win of the season.
In the “Race of Champions” – “Bomber” John Widmann faced Wayne Cox and Brooks again met Smith. Widmann, riding an unfamiliar motorcycle (Magnussen’s “full dress” Yamaha) red lit (-.10 R/T), immediately advancing Cox to the final. Brooks again defeated Smith – then continued his winning streak by claiming his second 1st place trophy of the day by sending Cox home with no trophies!!!
Top 5 in points at season’s end are: 1. John Widmann (365 – 6 wins); 2. Kirk Speelman (234 – 2 wins); 3. Wayne Cox (215 – 1 win); 4. Mike Burns (192); and 5. Hans Tautscher (185 – 1 win).
