GRAND SLAM ELIMINATOR – JUNE 5, 2005

Racers anxiously watched the sky, put the motorcycles back into the trailers, and at times, looked toward Eureka (less than a mile away), only to see the entire city soaked by yet another rain storm.  But….it didn’t rain at the Samoa Dragstrip and those who stayed for the show were treated to some excellent racing at the 1st Annual “Grand Slam Eliminator”.

Kirk Speelman, riding his 2003 Suzuki GSXR1300R “Hayabusa” was again the #1 qualifier, posting a lightning quick .013 reaction time during qualifications.  Speelman continued his fine racing and ultimately advanced to the final round where he faced reigning NHRA Division 7 Motorcycle Champion “Bomber” John Widmann, already a two-time winner this season at Samoa.

In the final round, both Widmann and Speelman broke out, with Widmann winning his 3rd race of the season by breaking out by a smaller margin (8.947 / 8.96 dial-in). The gap between the two riders at the finish line was .006 seconds – a distance of approximately 5 ˝ inches!!!  Widmann, a drag racing veteran of more than 20 years, said after the final round, “That’s what it’s all about right there.  Win or lose, that’s what you want – a great race!!”. Semi-Finalists were George Brooks Sr. and Wayne Cox.

In the “Full Throttle” Gamblers Bracket, Mike “Sport” Burns rode to victory over 1st time racer Morgan Debold, taking home the prize money and the ceremonial “Full Throttle Trophy”.  Congratulations to all the winners!  The next event(s) will be held on June 18th and 19th.
