TOP ELIMINATOR – AUGUST 28, 2005

With eight racers competing for trophies, prize money, and the ever so important POINTS, a 1st time winner (“Chopper” Leif Magnussen) upset the odds-on favorite (“Bomber” John Widmann).  Racers battling for 2nd-4th in the points standings failed to capitalize on the opportunity, were eliminated from competition after the 1st round, and missed the chance to distance themselves from their competition in the overall points standings.

In a double-breakout win, Magnussen was able to narrowly defeat Widmann – who waited nearly five seconds at the line before being released to chase his opponent.  Magnussen, being excited about the win (he is only the second racer this season to defeat Widmann head-to-head, Mike Pires being the other), commented that it was appropriate for him to win on this date – the 12th anniversary of his first drag racing experience.  Magnussen, who is waiting for his “real” race bike to be finished, recently purchased his 1000cc Yamaha (complete with saddle bags and trip-o-meter) so he’d have something to race before the season ended.  When asked why he chose a “full-dresser” instead of a lighter, more agile machine, Magnussen commented, “Because it was there, it was for sale, and I just couldn’t stand to WATCH you guys race anymore”.  If Magnussen continues with his success aboard the Yamaha, he might not want the new bike when it’s finished!!!

#1 Qualifier honors went to Wayne Cox of Black & White Motorsports, who posted a  .015 reaction time during qualifications.  His day ended in the 1st round where he met George Brooks Sr. who secured the win with the class’ best reaction time of the day, an impressive .008 R/T.  Cox started his run with a .068 reaction time, was catching up to Brooks, but “couldn’t catch him in time” and watched as Brooks beat him to the finish line.  Kirk Speelman (#2) and Hans Tautscher (#4) were also eliminated in the 1st round and failed to gain any ground on Widmann’s sizeable points lead in the overall standings.  Semi-Finalists were George Brooks Sr. and Mike Burns – who fought the necessary formality of obtaining his 9.90’s competition license and a host of motorcycle “gremlins” -  but was still able to advance by defeating Speelman in Round 1.

In the Full-Throttle Gambler’s Bracket, Cox defeated Hans Tautscher.  The next event, the NHRA “King of the Track” race, will be contested on September 11, 2005.
